The United States has an incarceration rate that far exceeds that of any other developed nation. Louisiana almost doubles the nation’s incarceration rate just for people within its borders.

With its prisons built on the bones of slave plantations, Louisiana is the incarceration capital of the world. There are so many people in the state serving extreme sentences, Louisiana has to rely on local jails to confine almost half of the people in the prison population. The map below shows how incarceration touches people in every part of Louisiana, including every one of the 130 facilities that hold people behind bars.
